What Makes A Good Handrail

A handrail has to be something you can grab quickly if you slip. Three things decide whether it does that job, and all three are easy to get wrong.

Its Height Is Measured From The Steps

A handrail's height is measured from the front edges of the steps, not from the floor. That is why a rail that feels right at the bottom of the stair can be too low halfway up.

It Has To Run The Full Length

Most of the rails we are asked to replace stop at the last step, and that is exactly where people turn and let go.

A handrail should run the full length of the stair and around the landing. Once the stair is wide enough for two people to pass, it needs a rail on both sides.

Which Standard Applies To Your Stair

For a stair used to reach equipment, storage or a work platform, the standard is AS 1657, and we build to it on every job.

If an existing stair does not meet it, we will tell you before we quote.

This shows where a stair meets a landing. The handrail height is measured from the line of the step edges, not from the floor. That's why a rail that feels right at the bottom can be too low at the top. The rail also carries on across the landing instead of stopping at the last step, because the last step is where people tend to let go.

Handrails And Banisters At Home

A handrail inside your home is the same job as one in a workshop. We measure on site, make it to fit your stair instead of cutting down a standard length, and fix it so it is solid when someone leans on it.

Common Jobs At Home

We often get calls about stairs with no banister on the open side, front steps that have become slippery, and decks or landings with a drop on one edge and no rail.

Stairs in houses are rarely perfectly square, so we measure rather than estimate. If a rail does not fit the stair properly, people stop holding it.

Different Rules Apply At Home

Stairs in a home come under the National Construction Code, which sets different rail heights and gap sizes to AS 1657.

We work out which rules apply to your stair before we price it.

This shows the same stair built to two different sets of rules. In a home, the rail runs down the open side with infill close enough that a child can't get through, and the stair follows the National Construction Code. In a workshop or warehouse, the same stair has a top rail, a middle rail and a kick plate, and it follows AS 1657. Each set of rules has its own heights and gaps, so the first thing to work out is which one applies to your stair.

Balustrade And Guardrail For Open Edges

An open edge is different from a stair. People are not holding on as they walk past, so the rail's job is to stop someone who trips or loses their balance from falling over the edge.

Landings, Platforms And Deck Edges

We fit guardrail to mezzanine edges, equipment platforms, loading docks and landings with a drop. Each rail is measured, made to fit and fixed to the building's structure, not just to the wall sheeting.

Balustrade At Home

We also install steel, stainless steel and glass balustrade at home. Our team are builders, not just a steel shop, so we take care of the finish as well as the structure.

Every open edge needs three rails. A top rail at about chest height, a middle rail so nobody can fall underneath, and a kick rail at floor level so nothing dropped goes over the side.

Adding A Handrail To An Existing Stair

Most of the stairs we are asked to fix came with the building. The rail might stop before the bottom, there might be a gap underneath big enough to fall through, or the landing might have an open edge.

What We Do First

We look at what is there and tell you what it needs, starting with what matters most, in plain words you can pass on to whoever approves the work.

Often all it needs is a second rail and anti slip strips on the step edges (nosings), not a new stair, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one.

When A Rail Is Not Enough

Sometimes the steps themselves are the problem, because they are too steep or too shallow to fix. Adding a rail to a stair like that does not make it safe, so we will tell you rather than fit one.

This shows an existing stair, which is what most of this work involves. The handrail stops before the bottom, there's nothing under the rail to stop someone falling through, and the step edges are the same colour as the steps. All three can be fixed without rebuilding the stair.

Do you install handrails on existing stairs?

Yes. Adding handrails to existing concrete, steel and timber stairs is a large part of this work. We measure the stair and have the rail made to fit, instead of cutting down a standard length on the day. It is priced by the metre.

Which standard applies to my stair, the NCC or AS 1657?

It depends on what the stair is used for. A stair in a home comes under the National Construction Code (NCC). A stair used to reach equipment, storage or a work platform comes under AS 1657. The two set different rail heights and gap sizes.

Do you do handrails at a house?

Yes, and it is a good part of our work. We install banisters on inside stairs, rails on front steps and decks, and balustrade on landings and around open spaces. We work in glass and stainless steel as well as steel. Our team are builders, not just a steel shop, so we take care of the finish as well as the structure.

How high does a handrail have to be?

It depends which standard applies to your stair, and that is the first thing we work out. A stair used to reach equipment, storage or a work platform comes under AS 1657.

Can you make an existing staircase compliant?

We can assess what is there and tell you what would need to change. Some stairs need handrail and edge protection only, which is straightforward. Others have steps that are the wrong height or depth, and those cannot be fixed without rebuilding the stair. If that is the case, we will tell you rather than sell you a quick fix.

Do you do balustrade and edge protection as well?

Yes. We fit guardrail to mezzanine edges, equipment platforms and open landings, usually in the same visit as the handrail. At home, we install balustrade on stairs, landings and around open spaces, in steel, stainless steel or glass.

Do I need a mezzanine for you to come out?

No. A lot of this work has nothing to do with a mezzanine. A rail on a stair, an edge that needs a barrier or steps that have become unsafe is a job on its own, and we quote it that way.
