Checking The Concrete Slab
A mezzanine puts the weight of a whole floor onto a few columns, and each column sits on your concrete slab. In an industrial estate shed this is usually fine, because the slab was poured to take a loaded forklift.
It's still worth checking. If the slab is too thin for the columns, we cut a concrete pad footing in under each one. This is normal work, and much cheaper than finding a problem later.
What We Look For Before Anything Is Drawn
We check the slab thickness, anything buried in it, and where the joints are. A column shouldn't sit on a joint in the slab, and moving it a metre at the design stage costs nothing.
Ask Your Landlord Early
Cutting a footing into a slab in a leased building is a structural change, and it's much easier to get your landlord's approval before the mezzanine is designed. Waiting on this is the most common thing that holds up a quote.
