Measured On Site And Made To Fit

Everything about a stair depends on one measurement: the height from the floor to the level you are going to. If that height is taken from a drawing instead of measured on site, the last step can end up a different height to the rest.

Why We Measure On Site

Floors are not perfectly flat, and upper levels are not always exactly where the drawings say. We measure the real height on site and make the stair to that measurement.

It means we need a site visit before we can price a stair. That takes a little longer at the start, but the job goes much faster at the end.

Space At The Bottom

A stair needs floor space at the bottom. Making it steeper saves space, but it makes it harder to carry things up.

Tell us what will be carried up and down it, and we will help you find the right balance before anything is welded.

This shows how a stair is set out. The angle decides everything else: the steeper the stair, the shallower each tread and the higher each step. Between 30 and 38 degrees, people can walk up comfortably while carrying something.

Access Platforms, Walkways And Plant Access

About half of these jobs are really about safe access to equipment (plant) that was installed without any easy way to reach it.

Getting To The Equipment

We build platforms beside machines, walkways over pipes and services, and landings at valves or filters that are currently reached by ladder, along with the stairs to get to them.

The Standard That Covers It

A stair or platform used to reach equipment, storage or a work area comes under AS 1657. Queensland's code of practice for managing the risk of falls at work refers directly to this standard.

We build to it on every job. If what you have now does not meet it, we will tell you what it would take to fix it.

Anti Slip Nosing For Stairs

A stair can become unsafe long before it fails an inspection. Worn step edges, polished concrete and wet entries are what people usually slip on.

What Nosing Does

Nosing is a strip fitted to the front edge of each step. It gives grip where your foot lands, and it puts a visible line on the edge so you can see each step on the way down, which is when people fall.

Fitted Without Shutting You Down

We fit it to concrete, steel and timber stairs. In a building that is already in use, it is the cheapest safety upgrade you can make, and it usually takes a morning with no need to close.

This shows what a stair nosing does. It's a strip across the front edge of each step, which is where your foot always lands. It puts a light edge on a dark step, so you can see where the next step starts on the way down. Many falls on stairs happen because the edge of each step is hard to see.

When A Stair Has To Be Rebuilt Rather Than Repaired

Not every stair can be fixed with a new rail and nosing. It is worth knowing which kind you have before you spend any money.

What Can Be Fixed In Place

Worn steps, a missing rail, an open landing edge and poor grip can all be fixed on your existing stair, usually in a day.

What Cannot Be Fixed

If the steps are too steep or too shallow, a rail or nosing will not fix it, because the shape of the stair is the problem.

We will tell you that rather than sell you a quick fix, and we will price a new stair alongside the repair so you can compare.

This shows an existing stair, which is what most of this work involves. The handrail stops before the bottom, there's nothing under the rail to stop someone falling through, and the step edges are the same colour as the steps. All three can be fixed without rebuilding the stair.

Do you build stairs without a mezzanine?

Yes, plenty of them. We build stairs up to equipment and platforms, stairs needed after a fitout, outdoor stairs, and stairs at home in a shed or up to a floor over the garage. We quote a stair as a job on its own.

How long does a steel stair take?

The site measure and making the stair take the longest, and the making is what sets the date. We measure the height on site, have the stringers and treads made to that measurement, and fit them in one visit. We will give you a firm date once we have measured.

Can you do galvanised or external stairs?

Yes. Anything outdoors or in a wash down area is galvanised rather than painted, because painted steel outside needs ongoing maintenance. We will tell you which finish your stair needs when we quote.

What is stair nosing and why does it matter?

Nosing is the strip fitted to the front edge of each step. It gives grip where the foot lands and it makes the edge of the step visible, which is what stops people misjudging the last one on the way down. On a worn or polished stair it is the single cheapest safety improvement available.

Does Queensland have its own rules for this?

The main rules are national standards that Queensland applies. A stair used to reach equipment, storage or a work platform comes under AS 1657, and Queensland's code of practice for managing the risk of falls at work refers directly to it.

A stair used to get in and out of a building comes under the National Construction Code instead, which sets different measurements. We work out which one applies to your stair before we price it.

Do you fit the handrail as well?

Yes. On a new stair, the handrail is part of the same job. If you already have a stair and only need a rail, we do that too as a handrail job.
